I was so excited to discover there was a new Wayside book, and one perfect for a pandemic! (Though there is no virus in this book, just a Cloud of Doom - same thing, right?) it was hilarious and brought back so many memories of the first books in this series。 Clever, and strung together so well。 I just wish we knew more about the man with the attaché…
Dena Pawling,
Cute book。 I really like this author。
JV Austen,
I was pretty excited to see a new book in this series - we read the other three with our daughter oh so many years ago。 So I started at the beginning of the series & read them all in the last few days。 Cloud of Doom - tongue and cheek for school mass testing - is just as funny。 All our favorite characters doing whatever they want to do - even collecting - shudder - toenail clippings。These are great books to read aloud as a family or to read to yourself when the children are at recess。
Kat Speeckaert,
If you waited 40 years for an update on your favorite class in your favorite elementary school, rejoice: your wait is over! Wayside School might be under a cloud of doom but have no fear, the 30th floor is as ridiculous and enchanting as ever。
Chris,
My kids (ages 6 and 10) absolutely love this Wayside School series by Louis Sachar。 But I think it might actually be funnier for the adults。 Highly recommend the entire series。
Ryan,
Loved reading these with the kids at night, they were way fun!
Lindsay,
Even this many years later, the characters and stories are still great。
Kristin,

I love Louis Sachar。 He is silly, clever, and gets kids。 Great sequel forty years later。
Mallory,
This was a delightful trip through time back to my childhood。 I loved these books as a kid and when I heard a fourth book was written I knew I would have to read it even if I have long since moved past Middle Grade novels。 And let me be clear, I regret nothing。 As I read I even found the characters family - I haven’t read these books in close to 3 decades and the characters still felt familiar。 That is some strong and powerful magic。 I love how creepiness and humor intertwine seamlessly。 I think This was a delightful trip through time back to my childhood。 I loved these books as a kid and when I heard a fourth book was written I knew I would have to read it even if I have long since moved past Middle Grade novels。 And let me be clear, I regret nothing。 As I read I even found the characters family - I haven’t read these books in close to 3 decades and the characters still felt familiar。 That is some strong and powerful magic。 I love how creepiness and humor intertwine seamlessly。 I think my favorite highlighted character this time around was Jason and his 999 page book he read。 。。。more

4。5/5: I have loved the wayside books for at least 25 years, probably more。 And am always excited as my younger children age up and it's time to introduce a new set of them to the wayside books。 I was so excited to see that Louis Sachar wrote a new wayside book after all these years。 I got it for myself to read not my kids though they can read it now that I am done with it。 What an appropriate book title for 2020 & appropriate themes with all the wackyness and fun of the other wayside books。 4。5/5: I have loved the wayside books for at least 25 years, probably more。 And am always excited as my younger children age up and it's time to introduce a new set of them to the wayside books。 I was so excited to see that Louis Sachar wrote a new wayside book after all these years。 I got it for myself to read not my kids though they can read it now that I am done with it。 What an appropriate book title for 2020 & appropriate themes with all the wackyness and fun of the other wayside books。 。。。more
Sarah Larson,
It was great to see another book in this series! I read the series to my class every year and they love it!
Levy,
It was so fun to rediscover these books with Zo。 They really held up, unlike other books that I loved as a kid there aren’t any cringe worthy themes or events。 This new 4th book in the series perfectly captures the essence of the first three。
Jack,
I loved the Wayside series as a kid, so I was curious to see how a new one written so long after the other ones would hold up。 It’s still cute, but I’m not the target audience for this so I can’t really say more than that。 If I were 8 again I’d probably enjoy this a lot more。 The illustrations are fine, too。 I’m partial to the Adam McCauley editions I read as a kid but like the rest of the book they’re cute enough。
Alicia,
So silly and fun to read before bed。 Love this author and so do my kids!
Sherry,
We listened to this one on our road trip, and it was a big hit。 I love this addition to the series。
Brandon,
This one took me back to 1992, when my teachers read the Wayside School books to our 6th grade class at Blandford School。 Many years have passed before this latest Wayside book came out, but it was fun to revisit the zany school where the books in the library are arranged by page length。 This newest book, like the others before it in the series, is a fun and entertaining experience。 The chapters cleverly refer back to prior shenanigans so that the book contains many satisfying links across chapt This one took me back to 1992, when my teachers read the Wayside School books to our 6th grade class at Blandford School。 Many years have passed before this latest Wayside book came out, but it was fun to revisit the zany school where the books in the library are arranged by page length。 This newest book, like the others before it in the series, is a fun and entertaining experience。 The chapters cleverly refer back to prior shenanigans so that the book contains many satisfying links across chapters。 It's a book that's sure to make you smile。 。。。more

My 2nd and 4th graders were entertained by listening to Louis Sachar read his book。
LobsterQuadrille,
I was stunned to find out about this newly published Wayside School book, and of course I had to try it out for myself。 It's a good book, especially by the standards of sequels that have been published much later than usual。 Louis Sachar did a great job of keeping that timelessness that has made the series hold up so well。 However, I didn't find it as cohesive as the other Wayside books。 Even with the plot device of the Cloud of Doom, not much seems clearly affected by it and so the stories her I was stunned to find out about this newly published Wayside School book, and of course I had to try it out for myself。 It's a good book, especially by the standards of sequels that have been published much later than usual。 Louis Sachar did a great job of keeping that timelessness that has made the series hold up so well。 However, I didn't find it as cohesive as the other Wayside books。 Even with the plot device of the Cloud of Doom, not much seems clearly affected by it and so the stories here feel less interdependent than in the original books。 There are lots of callbacks to previous Wayside stories, which are fun to read。 I also liked Ms。 Surlaw and her giant stuffed walrus, but I was disappointed that nothing was really done with this new character outside of one story。 And a couple of smaller things bothered me。 For instance, "goozack" is used once, but after that everyone just casually says "door" again。 Maybe Mr。 Kidswatter decided that "door" was an acceptable word to use again? Secondly, Mrs。 Jewls wasn't the same here at all。 She is much more impatient with her students than before, and even though she blames this later on the Cloud of Doom, it was noticeable throughout most of the story。 All I can guess here is that motherhood is stressing poor Mrs。 Jewls out。Wayside School Beneath the Cloud of Doom is a cute sequel and stays true to the original spirit of the series。 I didn't find that it had that same surreal magic and wit of the others, but it will still bring some smiles to most Wayside fans young and old。 。。。more

Elizabeth,
A really nice finish to the series。 It was still silly, but had more depth and my daughter and I both enjoyed that。 Maybe I was reading too much into it, but there seemed to be some well placed metaphors about hope that are very applicable in pandemic life。 It is so cool that this last book came out 40 years after the first, just when my daughter and I were finishing the series。
Rachael,
I read all of the Wayside books available in the 90s when I was in elementary school。 They are wacky stories and it made me excited to read。 This book did not disappoint! This is full of fun, crazy tales。 Get your elementary kid to read it!

I read the Wayside School books as a kid so it was super fun to read this latest installment。 Definitely recommend this blast from the past if you read this series as a kid。
emmy,
This book was exactly the nostalgic balm that my soul needed。 I'm a huge fan of the original books, and listened to this one on audio (narrated skillfully by the author) this morning on a difficult day。 I loved it; it did not disappoint。 This book was exactly the nostalgic balm that my soul needed。 I'm a huge fan of the original books, and listened to this one on audio (narrated skillfully by the author) this morning on a difficult day。 I loved it; it did not disappoint。 。。。more

I felt reunited with old friends! I'm always amazed by how Louis Sachar is able to create adventures that are so absurd, yet so appropriate for the characters。 This book is definitely what I needed - comic relief in the midst of stressful, challenging times。 I felt reunited with old friends! Lisa,
I LOVED these books growing up so I was super excited to see that Louis Sachar added the 4th book to the wacky Wayside School canon last year。 It did not disappoint :)
